A pair of adorable panda bears from China are the main event these days at this unsung tourist attraction, but that's not the first thing you'll be struck by when you come for a visit. While it may seem a bit odd it's Memphis's Egyptian heritage that's called upon in the imposing and unusual entranceway. Built to resemble an ancient Egyptian temple, the zoo's main gate is covered with traditional and contemporary hieroglyphics. Leading up to this grand entry is a wide pedestrian avenue flanked on both sides by statues of some of the animals that reside at the zoo. While once a drab dull side-show to the main event of Memphis's music scene the zoo has recently completed a $25-million renovation that has added a 5-acre, realistic primate habitat, an exhibit of nocturnal animals, and an extensive big-cat area with habitats that are both realistic and highly imaginative. The newly renovated zoo is a sight to behold and well worth a visit. The new areas are among the best zoo exhibits in the country. In addition to the regular admission, there is a nominal fee to see the pandas in the China exhibit. But it's worth the extra money. In addition to viewing the pandas, the China exhibit has areas inhabited by numerous other Asian creatures including colourful fish and birds, swinging primates and playful otters, it's like taking a step right into China! |
