Nightlife

For a century Memphis has nurtured one of the liveliest club scenes in the South, and the
heart and soul of that nightlife has always been Beale Street. Whether you're interested
in blues, rock, opera, ballet, or Broadway musicals, you're probably going to find
entertainment to your liking on this lively street. However, there's s more to Memphis
nightlife than just Beale Street. In downtown Memphis, at the north end of Main Street,
there's the Pinch Historic District, which now has more than half a dozen restaurants
and bars that primarily serve crowds heading to and from events at the nearby Pyramid.
There are also several theatre companies performing in midtown near Overton Square,
one of the city's other entertainment districts. South of Overton Square, at the corner of
S. Cooper Street and Young Avenue, you'll find the small Cooper-Young district, which
has a funky Elvis-themed coffeehouse, a handful of boutiques, and three good
restaurants with very popular bars.
To find out about what's happening in the entertainment scene while you're in town, pick
up a copy of the Memphis Flyer, Memphis's free arts-and-entertainment weekly, which
comes out every Thursday. You'll find it in convenience, grocery, and music stores, some
restaurants, and nightclubs. Another place to look is the Friday edition of the Commercial
Appeal, Memphis's morning daily newspaper. The "Playbook" section of the paper has
very thorough events listings.

- B.B. Kings Blues Club. Located at 147 Beale Street. You might be surprised to
hear this but the King of Blues does occasionally play here. But don't worry
about missing him. Even when he doesn't show up you're sure to be entertained
by the amazing performers who frequent the stage of this sensational club
- Hi-Tone Café. You'll find this joint at 1913 Poplar. Cutting-edge acts along the
lines of the Disco Biscuits headline frequent late-night gigs at this ultra hip
hangout, located across the street from the Memphis College of Art in Overton
Park.
- Dan McGuinness' Irish Pub. At 150 Peabody. With a full bar, an array of draught
beers including Guinness Stout, Newcastle Brown Ale, and Bud Light, as well as
premium import beers (Heineken, Corona, etc.), drink and general merriment
come first at this desperate-to-be-Dublin-esque pub.
